Organization - Concussion Baseline Testing

With the hockey season approaching, Holland Landing Health Centre would like to extend an offer for preseason baseline concussion testing using the Sports Concussion Assessment Tool – 3rd Edition (SCAT 3) for players with the East Gwillimibury Minor Hockey Association.

What is the SCAT 3?
The SCAT 3 is a standardized tool for evaluating injured athletes for concussion.  Preseason baseline testing with the SCAT 3 can be helpful for interpreting post-injury test scores.

What is a concussion?
A concussion is a disturbance in brain function caused by direct or indirect force to the head.  It results in a variety of non-specific signs and/or symptoms, and most often does not involve loss of consciousness.
While the majority (80-90%) of concussions resolve in a short period (7-10 days), the recovery time frame may be longer in children and adolescents.

By implementing a preseason baseline score, the SCAT 3 can then be used on the sidelines if a head injury or suspected concussion occurs during practices and games.  These comparative scores can assist in the recognition and diagnosis of concussions, and serve as an objective measure to guide return to play protocols.

The fee for the baseline testing will be $10.00 per athlete.
